Why We Do What We Do
Seven years ago, we began supporting whānau in need within our community. Three years ago, we saw a growing need for safe spaces where people could access a shower, wash with dignity and feel respected.
I grew up knowing that you can create something from nothing. I also understood the importance of having a safe space — somewhere you can feel secure, respected and able to simply be yourself.
When we saw that need within our community, we decided to take action.
Through life's challenges and all kinds of weather, we kept going — working on our front lawn, repurposing and recycling materials, searching for bargains and reaching out to other organisations for support.
Over 18 months, we repurposed two horse floats, designing and building them into mobile shower units. It took a great deal of whānau time, commitment and determination to bring the vision to life.
Together, we worked towards one goal: to get out there and help our people.
Today, that journey has created what is now Whanganui's only mobile shower service.
We didn't choose the name HOPE by chance. Each letter reflects what we want our service to provide:
H — Hygiene
O — Overall Wellness
P — Positive Outcomes
E — Environment
Together, these represent our belief that Hope is about more than a shower. It is about creating a safe environment, restoring dignity, supporting overall wellbeing and creating opportunities for positive outcomes.
Today, Hope Mobile Showers is a volunteer, whānau-led and not-for-profit initiative, made possible through the commitment of our whānau, volunteers and the support of our beautiful community.
We saw a need. We took action. We built a solution. And we continue to offer HOPE.
